This painting is based on the chemical structure of sulfamic acid, which is a naturally occurring acid that is often used in cleaning products. I just find it so fascinating, how beautiful Nature can be, even if we don’t normally see all of it.

This painting is a passion project for me. I first learned of Frau Perchda several years ago from a friend who was raised in Bavaria until she was adopted by Americans. She threw a Pechdenlauf party one winter. We made paper masks of Berchda’s ‘monster face’ and we raged out into the cold January night with fire and drums and noise. We breathed fire into the cold and began the process of chasing away evil and ushering in the Spring. It was glorious fun, but the center of the events, Frau Perchda, was a mystery to me. So I did what I do, and researched. I learned about her, the Belly Slitter, they called her. Horrible nighmarish stories of brutality and evisceration. As I studied her, I saw her called “beloved” and “the Bright One,’ and the image of her in my mind was confusing. Catholics assigned this long revered goddess the Feast of the Epiphany. I had to wonder how she went from the deity who cared for the souls of the orphaned or unloved, clothed in white veils covered in pearls, to this haggard forest monster with a skull headdress making even her shape frightening, waiting to cut people open in the dead of winter. This Springtime goddess of joy and beauty and benevolence became an iron faced Winter monster, surrounded by the Perchden, those beastly creatures almost indistinguishable from Krampus. It screamed to me of manipulation. It whispered “gaslighting..” to me. She was framed! They put her in an iron mask with a witchy, hooked nose that seemed to me like at least a mild nod at antisemitism. Which, according to the old stories, was not at all who Perchda was. She was inclusive. She loved the unlovable. She would never be that kind of monster. So this painting is me trying to give Berchda her real face back, under all the trappings of a world that assigned her villainy. She is amongst her beloved birch trees, her sacred watchers that make Perchda the Knower of Things. Her trees saw what happened, and they tell her the secrets. Her spinning wheel is over there, past those birches, waiting on her to spin Spring into being. Berchda was so beloved, in fact, that she was given her own rune, called Berkano, the rune of spring renewal. Blick is another word for dream, or vision. So please enjoy seeing her for what she was supposed to be, and breathe fire in the dead of winter. Shout and carry on wildly, and chase away the darkness, in her honor.

I’m afraid of spiders. I mean, conceptually I love them, they do wonderful thing, making their own spun works of art, and protecting us from bugs and stuff. I appreciate them, but they have no boundaries, and they move abruptly. It just freaks me out! When I am afraid, I tend to run right at the thing that scares me. Not always, but often. My family has always tried to learn about a scary thing to try to demystify it and help us learn how to deal with it, rather than quake in terror. So I found the most inoffensive spider that exists in my part of the world, the Orb Weaver, which incidentally was the same kind of spider from the book Charlotte’s Web. This painting is the product of me learning about something that scares me, while also learning how to convey the way light and water look, with paint. I just love my little friend Charlotte here, and I’m so delighted to be able to share with you the profound joy of her sunny little day!

In meditation, a lot of people use visualization. They imagine a sandy beach, or a peaceful hillside. My device is the River. My soul is tied to the River. The water flowing endlesslly to the Ocean, the Sea refusing no River. We as humans try to control the River. We contain it, divert it. But still it will not be stopped, not forever, anyway. The Heron lives in the marsh and on the River, carefully picking it’s way around tall reeds, dodging cattails. The Heron is a death bird in many cultures, The druids carved them over doorways and arches, so that even their likeness guards over the liminal places. The birds in Egypt were thought to ferry the souls of the departed to the place of judgement. These gloriously weird creature’s calls at night were thought to be the sound of someone’s death. These humble, precarious looking birds have all this responsibility, and you never see them upset or even all that concerned. Heron teaches us stillness, as it stands and stares into the water, waiting on its next meal to swim by. In my mind, on that river, the Heron is surrounded by all the plants that grow on my lovely little Ohio river’s edge. The Heron sees me, but I am not moving, in my contemplation. It comes closer, observing me as I see it. The Heron dips her graceful head as she steps closer, always watching. She turns her head, quizzically, staring at me. I hope the Heron of my mind River imparts some sort of grace, stillness, and sure footedness upon all of us. I hope we can all learn what Heron has to teach us. This painting is my whimsical, maybe slightly surreal take on things that are naturally occurring. Based in reality, though not adhering strictly to its established parameters. I hope you enjoy how I view my world!

Trees speak to my soul. They just live here, giving us all the best they have. Shade, oxygen, lumber, fruit. What would we be without them?! When I was a kid, I asked for a Black Maple tree for my birthday. I wanted something beautiful that would be part of my family home even if I was long gone. I just found them fascinating. Sadly, my tree didn’t survive the clay soil where we lived, and then the drought over the next year, but I tried, and I’m still in love with maples. Well, all trees really, but some more than others. I saw on a college campus once this pink maple tree, in the sunset, that just lit up and filled the sky with this wild pink and orange neon glow. That image stays with me even now, the glory of that tree. I like to imagine the little things living in a tree like that. Chipmunks and squirrels and birds. I wonder what they’re talking to each other about. Can you imagine?

Strangely, I began this piece as a background for another painting. The sunrise itself came together so gorgeously that I decided it should be its own focal point. Sometimes the subject IS the place, and this sparkling, glittering place in my mind is definitely its own. I hope the texture and color and pattern are as satisfying to the viewer as they were for me as I was painting them. The onset of a new day, full of light and possibility, is the gift I hope to share with the world. There is joy here to be had. Its the place I prefer to live, on that precipice of beginning. I only hope that the contrary pairing of contentment and anticipation can be felt by the observer of this painting.

My husband lived in Hawaii for some time. He talks about it often, and some of those stories stick with me. I’m always so fascinated by tales of goddesses and the things and deeds that are assigned to them. He told me stories of tourists picking up hitchhikers, entities presenting themselves as women, who would disappear out of the passenger seat as they drove. Stories of women approaching people on dark beaches. So I read about her. Listened to firsthand accounts of her. On the islands, they understand Pele as a present being, not some dusty, far away, outdated concept. They understand their land to be living and growing and changing, like flowing lava. All things are changeable and sometimes things have to be burned up before they can grow new life. The Impetus of Pele is how I feel when I feel powerful, or manic, or even furious. To me, the passion of fire is about renewal and inspiration. I like to think that that might be how a goddess of fire must feel sometimes too.

The Mantis is a colorful look at a strange and glorious creature. The Mantis eyes you as you stare at them, trying to impart upon you, the witness, some wisdom the Mantis feels you should know. The Mantis comes from some liminal place between worlds, where the edges of reality are blurry, to inform you of your proximity to something wild and incredible. I was inspired to paint this near mythological creature after a friend told me a story of being followed by mantises everywhere he went, after the passing of his grandfather. He really felt like the mantises were trying to comfort him, and maybe tell him something. While I’m not sure if they ever fully conveyed their message to him, his story, and the way he told it, resonated with me. I was always so glad to know he had these odd harbingers of comfort during a difficult time in his life. I hope this Mantis gives you some message you need to hear, even if that message is just to enjoy the weirdness and color and vibrancy that this world has to offer!

Trees speak to my soul. They just live here, giving us all the best they have. Shade, oxygen, lumber, fruit. What would we be without them?! When I was a kid, I asked for a Black Maple tree for my birthday. I wanted something beautiful that would be part of my family home even if I was long gone. I just found them fascinating. Sadly, my tree didn’t survive the clay soil where we lived, and then the drought over the next year, but I tried, and I’m still in love with maples. Well, all trees really, but some more than others. I saw on a college campus once this pink maple tree, in the sunset, that just lit up and filled the sky with this wild pink and orange neon glow. That image stays with me even now, the glory of that tree. I like to imagine the little things living in a tree like that. Chipmunks and squirrels and birds. I wonder what they’re talking to each other about. Can you imagine?

Strangely, I began this piece as a background for another painting. The sunrise itself came together so gorgeously that I decided it should be its own focal point. Sometimes the subject IS the place, and this sparkling, glittering place in my mind is definitely its own. I hope the texture and color and pattern are as satisfying to the viewer as they were for me as I was painting them. The onset of a new day, full of light and possibility, is the gift I hope to share with the world. There is joy here to be had. Its the place I prefer to live, on that precipice of beginning. I only hope that the contrary pairing of contentment and anticipation can be felt by the observer of this painting.

Jellyfish, while not indigenous to MY home, they are a naturally occurring and entirely inhuman creature. I used to love going to aquariums and zoos and watching them drift about in the tanks. I so admired their seemingly unending motion. Do these flowing, spineless beings ever rest? I just love them.
