The Mantis is a colorful look at a strange and glorious creature. The Mantis eyes you as you stare at them, trying to impart upon you, the witness, some wisdom the Mantis feels you should know. The Mantis comes from some liminal place between worlds, where the edges of reality are blurry, to inform you of your proximity to something wild and incredible. I was inspired to paint this near mythological creature after a friend told me a story of being followed by mantises everywhere he went, after the passing of his grandfather. He really felt like the mantises were trying to comfort him, and maybe tell him something. While I’m not sure if they ever fully conveyed their message to him, his story, and the way he told it, resonated with me. I was always so glad to know he had these odd harbingers of comfort during a difficult time in his life. I hope this Mantis gives you some message you need to hear, even if that message is just to enjoy the weirdness and color and vibrancy that this world has to offer!
